SOCIAL DEATH IN EXCHANGE FOR SALVATION FROM PHYSICAL DEATH: IPHIGENIA IMAGE IN THE CONTEXT OF TRANSITION RITES

Abstract.
The author presents the research of the Attic ritual of girls' initiation - arkteia - and reflects the current state of the question, reconstructs Brauronia rites basing on iconographic evidence, as well as the analysis of marble statues fragments; in addition determines the meaning of arkteia, pays special attention to the morphological similarity of myths about Iphigenia with the myths about arkteia foundation and to the connection of this myths group with the cult of Artemis Brauronia, and draws the parallel between the dramatic storyline and basic ritual pattern of arkteia.
