Abstract.
At the beginning of the XVIIth century, along with Peripatetic school doctrine, various versions of neo-Platonic and Hermetic philosophy pretending to develop the method of cognition and to create complete sciences system have significant influence. One of the questions under discussion is the role of memory in cognition, in particular the effectiveness of the so-called art of memory. The author shows how in early Descartes's works, such as Private Thoughts, Olympica, Rules for the Direction of the Mind, the philosopher's position is determined with respect to memory, which nature and types Descartes pondered over throughout his life.
