Abstract. The authors cover the beliefs associated with some wild and domestic animals and preserved by one of the ethnic groups of the Avars - Karalal people, pay special attention to the beliefs, customs, rituals and superstitions, dating back to the early forms of religion – magic, zoolatry, totemism, trade cult; and mention that despite the centuries-old confession of Muslim religion by Karalal people, these pre-monotheistic beliefs were organically interwoven into the ideology and ritual culture of the people, creating the syncretic so-called “folk Islam”.
