Abstract.
The author postulates the spiritual reasons of the current ecological crisis, analyzes the ideas of Francis Bacon, Rene Descartes and John Locke, who developed the mechanistic picture of the world and laid the rational foundations of instrumental approach to nature, describes the history of sustainable development conception, considers the key ideas of Aldo Leopold, who rethought economic development in the light of ecology, and discusses the practical feasibility of sustainable development principles.
