DAUGHTER-IN-LAW’S STATUS IN THE UDMURT FAMILY: STEREOTYPES OF BEHAVIOUR AND ETHICS OF RELATIONSHIPS

Abstract.
The author reveals the influence of generally accepted behaviour norms and ethics on the daughter-in-law’s status in the Udmurt family at the end of the XIX
th – in the first half of the XX
th century, analyzes her status among various local groups of the Udmurts, which shows that the avoidance custom of the Udmurts in the Udmurt Republic disappeared by the middle of the XX
th century, but the Udmurts living within the territory of the Bashkortostan Republic and Perm’ region saved this tradition; and concludes that it can be explained by the influence of the neighbouring Muslim culture.
