THE HASMONAEANS’ CAVALRY (167-63 BC)

Submitted: March 10, 2014
Abstract. The article reveals the problem of using the cavalry by the Jews during the reign of the Hasmonaean dynasty (167-63 BC). The author refers to the sources on the history of the Hasmonaean state and concomitant historiography (covering the problem extremely poorly) in order to follow all the currently available references on the use of the cavalry with the purpose to determine how important the Hasmonaean cavalry was in military practice. In the end, the author concludes that the cavalry was used by the Jews together with other types of troops, but it was of subsidiary character.
