Abstract. The article analyzes N. Ya. Simonovich-Efimova’s self-portraits in the context of the painter’s self-consciousness evolution at various stages of the sociocultural history of Russia of the first half of the XX century. The master’s creative work, alternative to the official trends, hasn’t been examined yet in the Russian art criticism, although its value is indubitable due to adherence to art eternal qualities: interest for reality, humanism, belief in the creative personality’s freedom, firmness in the assertion of one’s ideals.
