Abstract. The article reveals some aspects of the social and universally beneficial activity of Samara merchant community as a corporate body and gives the characteristic of its role and place in the life in Samara at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. As the result of the study and the analysis of the range of sources, which were introduced for scientific use for the first time, it was possible to detect that merchant community in Samara in every possible way tended to escape from performing their assigned social duties and minimize participation in the arrangements distracting merchants from their own business activity.
