Abstract.
Basing on the analysis of the key scientific works devoted to the study of medieval culture symbolism, the article reveals the main methodological trends in the research of the problem by the domestic and foreign authors of the second half of the XX century. The performed analysis suggests that a significant portion of the formed theoretical heritage has not obtained adequate scientific reflection until now, and its heuristic potential is still not completely revealed.
