ELECTIONS OF 1989 IN “CENTRAL ASIAN” TYPE OF REGIONS (BY THE MATERIAL OF TAMBOV REGION)

Abstract.
The article analyzes the campaign of People’s Deputies elections in the USSR in Tambov region in 1989 - the first alternative elections in the history of the soviet state. It is shown that its main features were the unlimited nominations of candidates in conditions of wide publicity, and the active participation of population. At the same time, regional party structures did not completely get rid of previous election schemes using administrative resources. The conclusion is made that the spring of 1989 awakened the political consciousness of citizens and was the catalyst of opposition formation.
