Abstract.
The article analyzes the significance of the Volga trade route, the existence of which was one of the key factors influencing the architectural development of the riverside territories of the Middle Volga region in the IX-XIX centuries. The paper identifies the historical stages of the architectural development of the Middle Volga region. The author concludes that the river Volga became the basic axis in the formation of the Volga towns located at the confluence of big tributaries that is explicable from the historical viewpoints considered in the article.
