Abstract. In the article the origin of woman’s secondary education in Russia is presented by the example of Catherine Woman’s School of the town of Arzamas of Nizhny Novgorod province. The author considers the substantial and material sides of woman’s education in the Russian province in the second half of the XIX century. The historian puts an archival fund, which contains the reports of the teachers’ meetings, the documents of the Society of Aid to Needy Pupils, the certificates of the school-leavers, the personal files of the teachers, the report on the school state, into scientific use for the first time.
