Abstract.
The article is devoted to the researches of the historian I. N. Smirnov, where he presented a large-scale and detailed historical picture of interethnic interaction between the Russians and the Finno-Ugric peoples within the territory of the Middle Volga region in the XVI-XVIII centuries for the first time in the Russian ethnopolitical tradition. The authors conclude that I. N. Smirnov in his analysis of this interaction and assessments of its results relied on scientific and objective approach.
