Abstract. In the article style-formative processes in designing culture at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries are considered. Special attention is paid to the objective prerequisites of “international style” appearance in the design of industrial production. It is shown that anti-eclectic tendencies in the creative work of art nouveau masters and the activity of G. Mutezius and the Deutscher Werkbund members resulted in the formation of early functionalism, for which the tendency to “supranational” forms and to the rationality of the constructive and technological decision of industrial goods design was typical.
