Abstract.
The article considers the evolution of conceptions about the duties of state and civil society in the political philosophy of Great Britain in the period of the XVII-XX centuries. The researcher analyzes the papers of the most prominent authors of the epoch - J. Locke, T. Hobbes, E. Burke, R. G. Collingwood and others. The author applies to the works of the philosophers of both liberal and conservative trends, in which, among other issues, they judge on the organization of political administration in Great Britain.
