Abstract. The article is devoted to the little-investigated aspect of the creativity of the famous French battle-scene painter of the XIX century Horace Vernet (1789-1863). Horace Vernet in his works devoted to the legend of Napoleon resorted to the canvases of A. Gros not only as to a historical source but he also used direct pictorial quotations from his pictures to create an illusion of trustworthiness, to show connection between the present and the past, namely to draw parallels between the governing of Napoleon and Louis Philippe of Orléans.
