Abstract. The article on the basis of the analysis of public declarations considers the attitude of the Communist and Socialist Parties of Portugal to the problem of the European integration, in particular, to the problem of the entry and membership of the country in the European Union. The paper examines the evolution of the views of the parties on the process and results of the European integration. The author concludes about the positive influence of the European Union membership on the development of the Portuguese economy, the political and social life of the country.
