METAPHYSICS: ORIGIN OF THE CONCEPT

Abstract.
The constant resuming of the issue about the necessity of overcoming metaphysics makes it important to clarify the semantic boundaries of the notion “metaphysics”. The article analyses the designations of philosophy by Aristotle, on the basis of which the primary context of the origin of the technical term “metaphysics” formed, and also meanings, which are clarified in this notion in philosophies by Thomas Aquinas and Francis Suarez. The author comes to the conclusion about polysemy and ambiguity inherent in the term “metaphysics” and defining its further controversial fate.
