“IMMATERIAL” AILMENT: PHENOMENON OF EXISTENTIAL PARADOX

Abstract.
The article is a multidisciplinary study written in the spirit of a philosophical and medical essay. The obstacle is a binary opposition “materialness/immaterialness”. The author in the company of O. Sacks shows what it means to be “not quite oneself”, “not in one’s body” or entirely lose the feeling of such. It is ascertained that the fact of possessing body isn’t a priori entity, it is extremely problematic. In the conclusion the researcher formulates a maxim: “To perceive one’s own body is to exist” - simple, but unobvious truth about oneself and each of us.
