Abstract. The author for the first time in domestic film studies addresses the problem of the influence of special effect on the imagery of the Soviet fantastic film of the 1930s. The paper reveals the specifics of the interaction and mutual influence of American and Russian cinematography on the eve of the Second World War through the peculiarities of developing the conflict of the human being and the puppet as representatives of marginal worlds. The problem is examined in historical and theoretical perspectives.
