Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the role and functions of the museum in contemporary culture. The themes of immortality, alive and dead are discussed intensively enough in literature devoted to museum subject matter, however the mentioned metaphors are not always applicable for the description of the contemporary museum being not only a tool of museumification, but also an instance of the production of new cultural meanings. Special attention is paid to the comprehension of this problem in the works by the leading theoreticians of contemporary culture (T. Adorno, P. Valery, R. Krauss).
