Abstract. The Soviet historiography examined the personality of the first president of the Republic of Korea Syngman Rhee from univocal positions. It was thought that all his government was built with the support of Washington. Meanwhile American sources unambiguously pointed out that the activity of Syngman Rhee was not regulated by the military administration of the USA in Korea, and even more, it often disagreed with its political course completely, which finally conditioned the peculiarities of the development of the Republic of Korea. The aim of the paper is to examine the role of the personality of Syngman Rhee in the process of the formation of South Korea state.
