Abstract.
In the article on the basis of the analysis of the previously unused materials of the periodic and journalistic publications of Belgorod the authors consider the assessments of the state of the system of public education and enlightenment of the city contained in them. The results of the research have shown that all the materials devoted to the state of the educational institutions in the city were very critical in their nature. The main theme was these or those disadvantages of Belgorod schools, colleges and classical schools; and the corruption, arbitrariness and lack of professionalism of the local authorities were pointed out as a reason of all the problems.
