Abstract.
The article is devoted to the formation of museum affairs within the territory of the modern Karachay-Cherkess Republic. The author focuses on its origin at the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX century, and on the problems of the development of state and public museums in the 1920-1930s related to financing, material support, and the formation of funds and collections. The paper also deals with the issues of research activity, which was conducted by the workers of Karachay and Cherkessia museums in the 1930-1940s including some results of the archaeological expeditions of the considered period.
