Abstract.
The article examines the problem of the freedom of a human personality in the historical conception by B. N. Chicherin. According to Chicherin, there is a fundamental contradiction between a man as a free creator of history and historical inevitability. History for Chicherin is a development of the world Spirit (from the philosophical point of view) and the will of Providence (from the religious point of view). A person may act contrary to historical inevitability, but eventually won’t break it, as the laws of spirit, which limit human freedom, are his/her own inner definition. As per Chicherin freedom itself represents a phenomenon of spirit and that’s why acts according to the laws peculiar to it.
