Abstract. The article examines the phenomenon of social memory as a unique product of the joint life and activity of people, which is directly connected with the need of the society to develop strong and reliable ties with its historic past. In case of social memory, the past acts not as reality or factuality. Social memory transforms historic events giving them the sense and ideas, which are in demand in the contemporary society. The past that reveals itself in social memory tells us not so much about what happened as about what is happening now. It makes the analysis of social memory topical and claimed in modern scientific knowledge.
