Abstract.
The article examines the situation, which occurred in the end of 1950s - the beginning of 1960s with the provision of bread products to the population of the Soviet peripheral cities, by the example of Ordzhonikidze. The author draws conclusion that the food crisis, part of which was a bread one, served as the source for protests in the society of the beginning of 1960s and contributed to the development of social apathy. During the following decades it became the substrate corroding the public life which accelerated the collapse of the Soviet state.
