Abstract.
The article analyzes peasants’ perception of monarch’s power and countrymen’s attitude to Nicholas II’s personality by the materials of investigatory cases of contempt of His Majesty the Emperor. The author identifies motives of peasants’ abusive comments about the tsar and clarifies circumstances, under which such bad language was used. Having analyzed the documents the researcher concludes that there was no criminal intent in peasants’ words but they indicated decline of the Emperor’s prestige and loss of confidence to the authorities on the whole.
