Abstract. The article provides an analysis of information society in the light of modern philosophical discussions on presence. The paper shows that information establishes a special modification of human interaction with the world, which is characterized by paradoxical combination of submergence into the world and detachment from it. Relying on G. Simmel’s analysis of culture development principles the author argues that from the existential viewpoint the key feature of information society includes a new approach to the problem of human presence that is not reduced to exchange of meanings and information.
