Abstract. The article deals with the problem of considering the category “female” in medieval culture and philosophy. By the example of Thomas Aquinas’s philosophical position essential ambivalence of conceptualization of the “female” in medieval thought is substantiated. On the one hand, the woman appears as a human being created in image and likeness of the God, worthy of salvation and eternal life. On the other hand, the “female” is perceived as secondary in nature, associated with sensuality and corporality.
