Abstract. The article shows that personal identity as an independent philosophical problem was firstly developed in the XVII-XVIII centuries by R. Descartes, J. Locke, D. Hume, J. G. Fichte as a problem of the individual’s identity. The analysis of their studies allows discovering specificity of their approaches to interpreting the individual’s identity conception and, consequently, peculiarities of their ideas of personal identity. Understanding specificity of these approaches is relevant in the context of modern socio-philosophical discussion on personal identity.
