Abstract.
The article attempts to consider the history of creation, structure, main activities of the largest missionary organization of the Great Britain of the XIX century - the Church Missionary Society, to analyze its social composition and sources of funding. The author comes to the conclusion that missionary activity in the XIX century acquired special significance, since it allowed not only creating groups loyal to the colonizers among the local population, but also forming an effective dialogue between cultures.
