THE TRUTH OF MEMORY AND OBLIVION

Abstract.
The article discusses the boundaries of applicability of the criterion of the truth in relation to the phenomena and practices of memory. Firstly, there is the idea of exact matching of past and present events, and secondly, the recognition of loss, constituting the meaning of the past. These two approaches should be complemented by the third one, according to which the truth of the lost determines not only the content of memory, but also its necessary boundary, as evidenced by the experience of oblivion. It is the recollection of the forgotten, manifesting itself in various forms, that is a way of recognizing the boundaries of memory and the condition for the applicability of the category of the truth to it.
