Abstract.
The article analyses public authorities’ influence on the design, financing and construction of religious buildings in Sevastopol in the first half of the XIX century. It is ascertained that these issues were within the competence of both the Navy High Command and individual heads of central departments of the Russian Empire, including the approval of the most fundamental issues of temple construction in the city at the level of the head of the state. At the same time, while forming the confessional space of the region it was considered necessary to establish historic continuity between the spiritual life of the new city under construction and the events of the Christian history of Tauric Chersonesos, which conditioned attention to Sevastopol as one of the sacred centres of the state.
