Abstract.
The article analyses the process of religious buildings construction in Sevastopol in the second half of the XIX century with the wide participation of individual philanthropists and representatives of the ethno-religious communities of the city. It is ascertained that the suggestion and implementation of the corresponding initiatives were conditioned by the need to restore those cathedrals and churches that suffered during the Crimean War and to erect new ones. It was connected with the satisfaction of spiritual needs of the city growing population, which was distinguished by confessional diversity. The general economic boom caused by the liberal reforms of Alexander II became a favourable background for it.
