Abstract.
The study aims to examine the phenomenon of criticism in pre-Kantian philosophy and formation of critical intention in succession of philosophical periods up to the XVIII century. The aim is attained by solving the following tasks: to analyse different approaches to the phenomenon of the critical as it is; to define the notion of critical state; to consider the circumstances under which this notion may present itself. The article reviews the basic philosophical conceptions from the antiquity to the French Enlightenment. The study is novel in that it contains the first attempt to construct the logic of formation of the notion of the critical in philosophical thought. One of the main results of the study is redefinition and reinterpretation of the notion “crisis of philosophy” in the pre-Kantian period.
