Musical Interpretation of Rembrandt’s Paintings

Abstract. The paper aims to identify the basic principles of decoding a pictorial work into a musical composition under the condition that the painter intended to encode a musical work in his painting. Within this approach, a painting is considered as a frame of a musical composition. Relying on musicological and historical approaches, the authors propose an algorithm to transform paintings into musical compositions, which allows broader interpretation of Rembrandt’s paintings. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the authors introduce a technique to decode Rembrandt’s paintings using a musical algorithm, which makes paintings audible. The research findings are as follows: the authors prove that in some of his paintings, Rembrandt encoded musical compositions.
