Main Lines of State Policy Concerning the Muslim Community in 1985-1991 (by the Example of the Mari El Republic)

Abstract.
The study aims to identify specificity of the main lines of the state policy concerning the Muslim community of the Mari El Republic in 1985-1991. Scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that the researcher has identified features of the relevant religious policy within the thematic scope of the article using previously unpublished documents from the State Archives of the Republic of Mari El. As a result, it is proved that the considered policy consisted in revival of the Muslim community (registration of religious organisations, provision of buildings for their religious needs, etc.), as well as in the Tatars’ national and cultural education (in late 1988 - 1989), which contributed to actualisation of religious and cultural traditions of Islam in the region.
