Abstract.
The aim of the study is to trace the evolution of social ideals from era to era towards the modern age. The authors analyse the features of their formation, show the role of myth and mythological thinking in this, and also identify the reasons that became the source of the change and transformation of ideals. The scientific originality lies in the interdisciplinary consideration of the problem over a wide time interval with the involvement of the Russian and Western experts’ works, as well as in the author’s analysis and interpretation of the consequences of a change in the balance of collectivist and individualistically oriented ideals in modern society. As a result of the study, the features of the formation and functioning of social ideals at various stages of evolution are shown, and their connection with the values of the modern consumer society is revealed separately.
