Organization of production and financial activities of drama theaters in Western Siberia in the late 1940s – mid-1960s

Abstract.
The aim of this study is to identify common characteristics and problems in the organization of the production and financial activities of drama theaters in Western Siberia in the post-war years and during the “thaw.” The article examines the main directions of state policy in the field of organizing the production and financial activities of theaters from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s, identifies the stages of strengthening and weakening state subsidies to theaters, and determines the main problems they faced due to the need to solve two conflicting tasks: preserving an ideologically verified repertoire and transitioning to self-sufficiency. The scientific novelty of the research is determined by the limited study of the topic of the production and financial activities of drama theaters in Western Siberia during the Soviet period, as well as the inclusion of archival documents that are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. As a result of the study, it was established that theaters in the USSR, as entertainment enterprises, had a production and financial plan of activity, which included indicators approved by state bodies. The discrepancy between the requirement to generate profit and the lack of independence in financial and creative matters led to the fact that drama theaters in Western Siberia regularly failed to meet their work plans, and therefore needed to attract additional funds. The state was forced to subsidize their activities, periodically increasing and decreasing the amount, while not weakening control over the activities of theaters through cultural management bodies at all levels of government organization.
