Abstract.
The aim of the study is to reconstruct the history of the existence of M. I. Ozhegov’s song “Between Steep Shores” and to identify the mechanisms of its adaptation to changing cultural and political conditions. The article examines the key stages and factors in the change of text and melody of this work. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that it is the first one to reconstruct in detail the history of the melody of the song “Between Steep Shores” based on the attraction of a complex of archival, musical notation and audio sources, and the influence of the song “Volga” (“Daughter of Steep Shores”), the notes of which appeared in 1923 in the musical arrangement of V. Ananiev, was revealed. The study found that under the influence of socio-cultural factors, there was an intertwining of two different texts with their melodic versions, which led to the formation of a stable version, somewhat different from the original, but ensuring the work a long life in the Russian song tradition.
