The search for true values in English philosophy and literature of the interwar period (1918-1938)

Abstract.
The aim of the research is to identify the foundations of ethics offered in English philosophy and literature in the context of the crisis of traditional values in the interwar period (between 1918 and 1939). The article examines the philosophical ideas of G. E. Moore and the ethical ideals expressed in the works of V. Woolf, E. M. Forster, and R. Kipling. The scientific novelty lies in the discovery of the key contradiction in the ethical quests of English intellectuals, reflected in philosophical works, journalistic essays, and works of art. As a result, two fundamentally different ethical positions were identified. One of them was aimed at a fundamental revision of traditional approaches, proclaiming inner states as the highest value. The second proceeded from the immutability and relevance of traditional values. The contradiction between these positions determined the further value search in Anglo-Saxon philosophy of the 20th century.
