The specifics of the relationship between the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and the communist parties of the former Soviet republics (1991-1995)

Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify the factors that determined the nature and dynamics of relations between the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) and the communist parties of the former Soviet republics in 1991-1995. The article traces the institutionalization of inter-party ties through the Union of Communist Parties – CPSU (UCP-CPSU), analyzes three models of interaction – alliance (Communist Party of Belarus), oscillating loyalty (Communist Party of Ukraine, Central Asian communist parties), and autonomization (Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova, United Communist Party of Georgia, Baltic communist parties) – and reveals the role of the personal factor in compensating for the weakness of formal coordination structures. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that, based on previously unused documents from V. I. Zorkaltsev’s personal archive (RGASPI, fund No. 813), the dependence of the specific model of inter-party interaction on four factors has been established: the geopolitical position of the country, the electoral potential of the party, the nature of the political regime, and the personal ties of party leaders. As a result, it is established that by the mid-1990s the unity of the communist movement in the post-Soviet space had been largely eroded: the UCP-CPSU performed only coordinating functions, while each member party increasingly pursued a nationally oriented strategy.
