The Chinese folk dance “Yingge” in the city of Puning: lineage of succession, cultural symbols, and overseas dissemination

Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify the local traditions, transmission lineage, cultural symbols, and overseas dissemination of the Puning Yingge dance as an object of the national intangible cultural heritage of China. The article analyzes the influence of the geographical and socio-cultural environment of Puning on the formation of the Yingge dance, characterizes the stylistic features of the Puning Yingge, provides an overview of its main ensembles, and traces the history of its overseas dissemination while interpreting the symbolism of Shi Qian’s prop. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that, for the first time, the evolution of the prop used by Shi Qian (a character from the classical Chinese novel “The Water Margin”) from a “torch” to a “cloth snake” is interpreted in detail, revealing the dual logic of its stage expressiveness and cultural symbolism rooted in traditional Chaoshan culture and totemism. The results show that the specific geographical and socio-cultural environment of Puning has shaped the masculine and majestic style of the Yingge dance; its leading ensembles have developed unique performance styles, demonstrating the richness of this folk art; and the overseas dissemination of Yingge, which began in the late 19th century with the migration of Chaoshan people to Southeast Asia, continued into Europe and America in the 21st century.
