A stage interpretation of traditional Chinese costumes in B. Sheng and D. H. Hwang’s opera “Dream of the Red Chamber”

Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the role of traditional Chinese costumes in B. Sheng and D. H. Hwang’s opera “Dream of the Red Chamber” (2016) for revealing the work’s artistic content and philosophical ideas. The article examines the principles of the costume designs by Tim Yip, their connection to traditional Chinese aesthetics, and the symbolism of color, texture, and ornament. The work analyzes the costumes of eight key characters (Bao Yu, Dai Yu, Bao Chai, Lady Wang, Granny Jia, Princess Jia, Aunt Xue, and the Monk) as means of artistically expressing social status and psychological states, and as resources for unfolding the plot and the musical dramaturgy of the work. The scientific novelty lies in presenting traditional Chinese costume in Sheng and Hwang’s opera as an integrated system of artistic representation: analyzing the costumes of the opera’s principal characters reveals their function as means of expressing characters’ distinctive states. The study clarifies the role of color, texture, and ornament symbolism as crucial elements of visual dramaturgy that shape the opera’s semantic space and enable an interpretation of traditional Chinese aesthetics within the context of contemporary academic opera. The study finds that costume functions as a primary semiotic element through which characters’ personalities, inner worlds, social statuses, and destinies’ evolution are revealed, while also reinforcing the work’s philosophical themes related to the illusory nature of being, predestination, and the tragic dimensions of human existence.
