Bulgarian dance tradition in the discourse of ethnocultural identity

Abstract.
The study analyses the role of dance traditions in preserving Bulgaria’s ethnocultural identity against the background of historical and contemporary challenges. The aim of the study is to identify how exactly these traditions contribute to the strengthening of national identity against the background of globalisation processes. The paper examines six ethnographic regions of Bulgaria, each characterised by unique choreographic elements reflecting local cultural values and everyday life. Key aspects of folk dances and their transformation under the influence of globalisation are highlighted, as well as the role of Bulgarian ballet in maintaining national traditions. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the in-depth analysis of the influence of folklore on Bulgarian ballet and its significance for the modern Bulgarian identity, which provides new insights into the interaction between folklore and classical dance. Strategic directions for the development of cultural policy and ballet pedagogy are proposed. The results of the study show that the integration of folk dances into ballet creates a cultural bridge linking historical and contemporary forms of artistic expression, emphasising the important role of folklore in cultural policy and preservation of Bulgaria’s national heritage.
