Regional features of folk dance of the Russian North

Abstract.
The study aims to identify the primary causes behind the formation of specific dance vocabulary influenced by ancient rites, customs, and the climate of Russia’s northern regions. The article examines the formation of the Russian plyasovaya (dance) culture – a distinctive genre of Russian folk dance characterized by its regional diversity; in particular, the work explores the choreographic features of the Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions of the Russian Federation. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the analysis of the dance art of these regions, the establishment of common traits in their choreographic traditions, the identification of characteristic features of Northern Russian dance culture, and the uncovering of the folklore basis that influenced the formation of distinctive choreographic vocabulary and specific dramaturgical principles of Russian folk dance construction inherent to this area. The results, which establish the causal links in the crystallization of Northern Russian folk choreography (specifically in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions), indicate that Russia’s choreographic culture, while possessing certain common traits that distinguish it from the folk dance of other countries, encompasses various regional peculiarities that vary depending on its existence in a particular region.
