Abstract.
The study aims to trace the formation of pedagogical methodology for domra players from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The article examines such instructional manuals for three-string domra players as “Domra Self-Tutor” by I. Decker-Schenk, “Complete School and Self-Tutor for the Domra” by V. Nasonov, and “Guide to Organizing Great Russian Orchestras (Domras, Balalaikas) in Worker and Red Army Clubs and Schools” by A. Chagadayev. These works provide instructions on tuning the instrument, address the selection of the plectrum, cover the fundamental aspects of the player’s posture and technique, and include repertoire supplements. The scientific novelty of the study lies in identifying specific recommendations within these early manuals regarding high-quality sound production, freedom of the playing mechanism, and repertoire policy, which remain relevant today. It was found that during the formative stage of domra methodology, the right-hand position generally did not involve a moving support on the little finger. Furthermore, as early as the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, domra players concluded that the quality of the plectrum directly affects the quality of the sound. The results of the study establish that the first manuals addressed to domra players created favorable conditions for the emergence of fundamental 20th-century works that examine the most important aspects of the domra player’s posture, performance technique, and high-quality sound production in detail.
