Abstract.
The article analyzes the image of the communal apartment in V. V. Bortko’s film “Heart of a Dog” as a significant element of the work’s artistic structure and semantic organization. The study aims to reveal the semantic and dramaturgical potential of the communal space and its function as an artistic model of a social experiment within the context of the early Soviet cultural paradigm. The paper examines representations of the communal apartment in Soviet cultural and cinematic tradition, analyzes the film’s spatial oppositions, the specifics of the visual and dramaturgical organization of the communal space, and its influence on the formation of the character Sharikov. Special attention is paid to the semiotics of the communal space and its role within the system of artistic oppositions that determine the film’s philosophical content. The scientific novelty of the study lies in interpreting the communal apartment not as a secondary socio‑domestic background but as an autonomous artistic model of a social experiment parallel to Professor Preobrazhensky’s scientific experiment. The research demonstrates that the communal space functions as an active meaning‑forming element shaping the film’s dramaturgy, visual language, and anthropological problematic, and significantly influencing the transformation of the characters’ personalities.
