Teaching “Effective Reading” in a Foreign Language (Based on IELTS Training Materials)

Abstract. The aim of the research is to identify the features of teaching “effective reading” in a foreign language (hereinafter - FL) for the successful passing of the Reading section of the International English Language Testing System (hereinafter - IELTS). The paper presents the definitions of the concepts of “reading in FL” and “effective reading in FL”, considers the basic techniques of “effective reading” of FL texts, identifies the main issues encountered by students when completing tasks of the IELTS Reading section and also offers recommendations on using the technology of “effective reading” of FL texts when preparing students for this examination. Scientific novelty of the research lies in developing authors’ recommendations on the use of the “effective reading” technology to improve reading as a speech skill in FL to increase the effectiveness of IELTS preparation. The research findings are as follows: the authors have summarised and clarified the issues that arise when teaching “effective reading”, have classified a number of methods and techniques of “effective reading” in FL, as well as have made recommendations for the successful passing of the IELTS Reading section.
